The saint was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire that roasted him. God gave him so much strength and joy that Lawrence joked with the judge saying “Turn me over”. Before he died, he prayed that the city of Rome might be converted to Jesus. … Lawrence died on August 10, 258.

Saint Lawrence is a Patron Saint of:

  • Cooks
  • Deacons
  • Poor

First reading
Anyone who ever tries to do good in this world and struggles to see any good thing come from it, take comfort in these words:

The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.

Responsorial Psalm
Blessed the man who is gracious and lends to those in need.

Alleluia Verse
Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness
but will have the light of life, says the Lord.

Gospel Portion
We celebrate Saint Lawrence today. Deacon and Martyr.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.”

A good question with two different answers. What do you think of the diaconate?

  • The diaconate is the lowest of the Holy Orders.
  • The diaconate is the foundation of all the Holy Orders.

I suppose both are true yet it is fair to question the orientation of the one who provided the answer.

It’s like driving a car on a dirt road. The key is to not fall into the ruts and keep the car in the center.

Stay centered.

Have a good feast day, brothers. See you tonight, God willing.

Peace be with you,
Deacon Gerry

This scripture always reminds me of the call to serve sacrificially
