Readings: ACTS 11:21B-26; 13:1-3; PS 98:1, 2-3AB, 3CD-4, 5-6; MT 5:13-16

Notes

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me (Your Names Here) for the work to which I have called them.”

The Franciscans wrote a wonderful reflection on Barnabas here: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day/saint-barnabas/

Summary

When we season food we add to the food various salts, peppers, herbs and spices. Food becomes even more delicious. A seasoned person is said to have a lot of experience in something. Such a person is a delight to be around as they help you navigate life well.

A life of faith is a sort of seasoning for the giver and the receiver. For the giver the experiences shapes and molds the person. In the language of faith we name it with words like sanctification, consecration and holiness. For the receiver it is an example and aspirational goal and a sign of the Father’s love. A young believer will often say, “I want to be [this way or that]”.

Barnabas gives us such an example.

  1. He was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith.
  2. He rejoiced about them.
  3. He exhorted and encouraged them.
  4. He got help (Paul).
  5. He taught them.
  6. He accepted the tasks given him by the Holy Spirit.

Reflection

Barnabas was salt and light for many. Salt is a necessary element of our physical diet and our spiritual soul. Light because he illuminated the way forward.

  • Salt is up-close and personal.
  • Light shines far and wide and can be seen from very far away, miles even.

Jesus reminds us the greatest type of salt and the greatest type of light is those that are the good works revealing the Father’s love.

Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

Personal Reflection

The rains are arriving! Thanks be to God. In the distance lightening announces the approach of the saving rains! The Guatemala Maya Center will be a wet mess. I can’t wait!

Ever melt at a meme or video where a person shows kindness? Something deep inside us resonates with the kindness given and visible. Be that person. By your emotional response you are already wired to do so.

I want to always be submissive to the Lord for the tasks and purpose he has set aside for me. You and I share the call of Barnabas and Paul.

The Holy Spirit says, “Set apart for me (Your Names and My Name Here) for the work to which I have called them.”
