Greetings on this the Thursday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: 1 Sm 18:6-9; 19:1-7; PS 56:2-3, 9-10a, 10b-11, 12-13; Mk 3:7-12
Notes
As the old proverb says, ‘From the wicked comes wickedness.’ Thus I will not lay a hand on you (1 Sam 24:14).
David was a complicated man. We can try and simplify his life poetically but in reality he was very complicated. Short reflections do not allow expansive discourse on David. So we will simply say this moment for David is a good moment. And a few others when he resisted giving evil for evil. Twice in sacred stories he did not kill Saul when he had a clear advantage to do so. ‘From the wicked comes wickedness.’ Thus I will not lay a hand on you.
When we reject the evil impulse we make room for the divine.
In our gospel portion today it is like yesterday. Yesterday I encouraged you to Stretch toward Jesus as the man with the withered hand. Now again I encourage you to press toward and upon him to touch him.
Summary

Political leaders filled with jealousy are the most dangerous for they will use their influence to address their insufficiency. It is true The women played and sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” And Saul lost his mind. How can I not mention that in regards to the Trump phenomenon.
Reflection
When we think of David and the course of his life and the choices he made, it is critical to remember the best decisions. Do not return evil for evil.
Personal Reflection
I have had to contend with some very nasty comments and projections from homeowners in my community as I attempt to govern my one year term with balance, fairness and purpose. Not perfectly but I kept from returning like-to-like. It would have been momentarily satisfying to refute them. But do not return evil for evil. In the end, it is best to leave the pathway clear to the divine so that all can find relief in the one who made us.
