Notes
Job’s life is the summary of a life of faith yet filled with physical, emotional and spiritual pains. He is singular and possibly mythical but each of us can cleave to one portion of his story or another. His life is the struggle of being human in a world where Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Yet the Lord is present and defending us from harm. The Lord limits the effects of evil and does not allow its full potency upon us lest we die immediately.
Summary
In our gospel portion today we meet Jesus exactly where the devil attacked Job most severely, in his person, in his home and in his family. Jesus reverses all of this beginning in the family, and in the persons of the community.
Reflection
Be confident in the love God has for you.
Personal Reflection
Regardless of the troubles of life. The Lord comes to our aid. The psalmist speaks most plainly here. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Bind and loosen, Lord!
Bind and loosen.
First Reading
Job spoke, saying: Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery?
Responsorial
Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He tells the number of the stars;
he calls each by name.
Second Reading
Brothers and sisters: If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!
Gospel Acclamation
Christ took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.
Gospel
On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them.
When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him.
Peace be with you,
Deacon Gerry
