Greetings on this the Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent
Readings: Jer 18:18-20; Ps 31:5-6, 14, 15-16; Mt 20:17-28
Notes
In our readings today we see the battle of power. Those who have it and those who want it. Of course, every one of us rationalize our own position and behavior and excuse any misstep we may make. But as to the other, no. The first reading Jeremiah is lamenting the consistent and increasingly dangerous verbal attacks pressage to physical attacks. Note: Jeremiah’s final end is not known although the theory is he died a martyr in Egypt.
Summary
The sons of Zebedee are tempted in a parallel way. Let me have power.
Reflection
Power corrupts if we see it as an end in itself or an end to justify the grift. To thyself be true.
Personal Reflection
Power is a dangerous thing. Jesus asks us to take a servant leader heart, like himself, and be willing to die for righteousness. I eschew power as often as I can and try to be mindful when power is at the center of my thoughts – it happens to everyone.
First Reading
The people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem said, “Come, let us contrive a plot against Jeremiah. It will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests, nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets. And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue; let us carefully note his every word.”
Responsorial
Save me, O Lord, in your kindness.
Gospel Acclamation
I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.
Gospel
But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Peace be with you,
Deacon Gerry
