Greetings on this the Monday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: EZ 24:15-23; DEUTERONOMY 32:18-19, 20, 21; MT 19:16-22
Pride
In our sacred readings today we encounter the devastating effects of pride. As is often the case, the readings are split between the societal and personal pride mistakes.
Old Testament
Ezekiel as a Sign for the Exiles is our first reading. It follows a series of two allegories.
- The Two Sisters (Samaria and Jerusalem nation pride becomes idolatry)
- Allegory of the Pot (the transgressions are egregious and no human effort can erase them)
Then, Ezekiel as a Sign for the Exiles (even his own wife died and he did not mourn as all will mourn at the fall of Jerusalem).
Pride of place and pride of station, that is, the Temple and the special relationship with the Lord are no substitute for true worship and true relationship.
New Testament
The young man who asks Jesus about ‘gain’ eternal life. Jesus responds with the 4th to the 10th commandment. The young man replies that he observes. Jesus then essentially asks him: Do you observe the 1st to 3rd commandment? Here the question is personal. What do I do and how do I relate to the Lord.
Summary
In our first reading and gospel portion we see that the minimal natural righteousness is insufficient to the task of being assured eternal life. Eternal life is relational both man-to-man and man-to-God. The facade of righteousness is a false god.
Reflection
In the first reading trusting the Lord is the highest national and societal imperative. In the gospel portion the right relation with the Lord is every bit important as the right relation with others. The Lord doesn’t ask for what we can’t do. He offers the help needed to find our perfection in him.
Personal Reflection
Be perfect. Sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.

First Reading
Thus says the Lord GOD: I will now desecrate my sanctuary, the stronghold of your pride, the delight of your eyes, the desire of your soul.
Responsorial
You have forgotten God who gave you birth.
Gospel Acclamation
Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Gospel
A young man approached Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?”
The young man said to him, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
Peace be with you,
