Understanding Jesus’ Teachings During Lent

Search the Scripture

Greetings on this the Thursday of the Fourth Week of Lent
Readings: Exodus 32:7-14; Psalm 106:19-20, 21-22, 23; John 5:31-47

Schedule

I’ve been MIA these past two days due to time demands. Actually have to run out now as well. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. In our gospel readings this week chapter 5 of John takes center focus. Here we have a wisdom-like response to the reactions to the actions of Jesus. Jesus acts, accused and responds with theological understanding.

I missed:

  1. Cure on a Sabbath at the Sheep gate. Jesus is rejected for curing on the Sabbath.
  2. The Work of the Son. Jesus is rejected even as he does what the Father does – give life, they tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God.
  3. (today) Witnesses to Jesus. The Father validates the Son.

Summary

You search the scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf. But you do not want to come to me to have life (JN 5:39-40).

Reflection

We are left with deciding what is important, real and true. Jesus reminds us to look at the works and the fruits as your best evidence of what is real and true. Otherwise listen to the heart strings as like John who leapt in the womb. And, finally, do read sacred scripture as the love story that it is.

Personal Reflection

Many of my friends and acquaintances are going through difficult times. Have faith in the Father and his Son. These storms will pass.
