When he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.” He said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion said in reply, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed (MT 8:5-8).

Holy Bread

The Holy Mass

Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.

The Order of Mass, The Communion Rite, No.132

As grain once scattered on the hillsides
was is this broken bread made one
so from all the lands your church be gathered
into your kingdom by your Son.

Reflection

The Healing of a Centurion’s Servant is preceded by The Cleansing of a Leper and followed by The Cure of Peter’s Mother-in-Law.

Everyone:

  1. The Leper (“Unclean”) who cannot be touched. Is indeed touched and healed.
  2. The Centurion’s Servant, a non-Jew. A gentile and foreigner is welcomed.
  3. Peter’s Mother-in-Law, those close to us.

All this presented today in the context of the Holy Mass.

Personal Reflection

The servant was helped by intercessory prayer. Peter’s Mother-in-Law the same. Everyone is welcomed to the Sacred Banquet and the healing touch of Jesus.
So are you.
