Greetings on this the Memorial of Saint Bernard, Abbot and Doctor of the Church
Readings: Judges 9:6-15; Psalm 21:2-3, 4-5, 6-7; Matthew 20:1-16
Summary
The olive tree, the fig tree, and the vine all refused to lead the people by way of their virtues because the people did not respect that which they are symbols of:
- Olive tree – Honor both Man and God – gods and human beings are honored (Judges 9:9), worship the Lord.
- Fig tree – Obedient to God – sweetness and my sweet fruit (Judges 9:11), not vain worship.
- The Vine – reliance on God – cheers gods and human beings (Judges 9:13), sabbath rest.
These correspond to the first three commandments.
Instead they picked the buckthorn, an invasive that chokes out others and consumes all that is good.
This Old Testament reading is in contrast to parable of The Workers in the Vineyard. Here everyone who worked for the Lord, all day or but just an hour, receive a reward.
He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? [Or] am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (MT 20:13-16)
Reflection
In the first instance we have the responsibility to pick sound leaders. The fact that we often can only pick from various versions of buckthorns is a serious indication that we do not cherish: the Olive tree, Fig tree and Vines among us. Where is public virtue in our decision making? We have the government we deserve. Yes, seriously. We did nothing to invite in sincerity the best among us (morally, ethically, training and talent) to be our leaders. We might ask but we are so fickle and noncommittal that the Virtues Reject Us.
In the second instance, Jesus reassures those who do step forward despite the rank abuse and insincerity, will receive his/her reward for service made to the kingdom and to the betterment of the human family. God is generous.
Personal Reflection
Step Up!
It is true those who fell into the trap of Jotham’s parable are both victim and perpetrator.
If you are an Olive tree, Fig tree or good Vine – step up! Have the courage to ignore the false hearts and lead with ethical, moral and spiritual wealth.
