But Jesus alone

Transfiguration

Greetings on this the Second Sunday of Lent
Readings: Genesis 12:1-4a; Psalm 33:4-5, 18-19, 20, 22; 2 Timothy 1:8b-10; Matthew 17:1-9

Summary

Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (PS 33:22).

When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone (Mt 17:6-8).

Reflection

Abram trusted. The Psalmist trusted. Paul instructed Timothy to trust in the Lord.

Abram went as the LORD directed him (Gen 12:4a).
Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield (PS 33:22).
So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord (2 Tim 1:8a).

In the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah spoke and pointed to Jesus. The Father, too pointed to Jesus, from a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

Personal Reflection

Let us see Jesus, resplendent.
Let us see Jesus through the witness of the Father, Moses (Law) and Elijah (the Prophets) combined.
Let us listen to him.
When everything else is removed, may it be enough for us that Jesus remains.
