Greetings on this the Tuesday of the Second Week of Easter
Readings: Acts 4:32-37; Psalm 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5; John 3:7b-15

Summary

In our first reading and in the gospel portion we have the seeds of encouragement. Barnabas – donating his wealth and standing – for the good of the people. Jesus – donating his divine wealth and standing – for the good of the people. Barnabas was in imitation of the Lord, and the Lord being Lifted Up – Jesus – exalted to glory at his cross and resurrection, represents healing for all (NABRE commentary).

Jesus said to Nicodemus: “‘You must be born from above.’

The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the Apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

Thus Joseph, also named by the Apostles Barnabas (which is translated “son of encouragement”), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth, sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the Apostles. (Jn 3:7b; Act 4:32-33a, 36-37).

Reflection

The Ultimate Encouragement

No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (Jn 3:13-15).

Personal Reflection

Sometimes we reduce this to the slogan: Time, Talent and Treasure. And that is a part of it, sure. But, the motive for Barnabas was for the salvation of souls and the healing of ill in the same ways as Jesus – devoted, fully, sincere and with purpose. Helping others to see the One Lifted Up.

In every way, let us be like Barnabas – sons of encouragement – imitators of Jesus.
