Greetings on this the Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr
Readings: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10; Psalm 112:1-2, 5-6, 7-8, 9; John 12:24-26
Summary
Today is a big day for me.
- As an outdoorsman.
- As a deacon.
Evening Mass
#1. The fall I took on the Appalachian Trail has turned out to be extensive structural damage. It is likely to be months of surgery and rehab.
Update: 14 Day intravenous antibiotics starting soonest.
- Broken elbow
- 2 tendons severely torn – One going up to elbow, one going to wrist.
- Ruptured bursa
- Two infected fluid collections.
- Bone infection.

Reflection
A holy priest friend sent me a video (non-public). From the news report back then: On Thursday, May 16, 2019, the funeral of Jean Vanier, who died during the night of May 6-7, will be held in Trosly-Breuil (Oise). He founded the first L’Arche community in this village.
2:27 p.m.: Reading of the Gospel, first in French by André Haurine, a visually impaired deacon: the text of the washing of the feet. “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
The point of the video is the deacon proclaiming John’s Gospel and the theology of service, not Vanier himself. I watched him then as an able-bodied deacon admiring another man’s perseverance. I watch him differently now.
I quoted this to my pastor. I told him I saw the video given me by a priest. At the time I was healthy, thought it an odd gift. Not so distant now.
Personal Reflection
In the end, one must remember: The Father will honor whoever serves me (Jn 12:26b).
