The Better Part

Seek the Truth

Greetings on this the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary

Readings: Jonah 3:1-10; Psalm 130:1b-2, 3-4ab, 7-8; Luke 10:38-42

Summary

The people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her (Jon 3:5; LK 10:42).

Reflection

The people of Nineveh listened to the prophet of the Lord (by way of Jonah who was more than happy to accentuate the condemning part). It wasn’t an easy message but a truthful message that had such simplicity and authenticity that is was immediately obeyed (I’m sure the belly of the fish story helped the credibility factor). In Mary’s case the divine voice was gentler and warm and she found Jesus to be warm and inviting with a message of love’s simplicity and authenticity.

  1. Prophecy and witness (belly story).
  2. Warmth and Love.

The key is the truth. Truth delivered distinctly is always profound and compelling.

Personal Reflection

I urge you today, more than before, discern the truth of the message and the messenger. The airwaves and political highest office is filled with such gross dishonesty that it seems to me it is neither like Jonah (who by the way wasn’t a nice guy. He never did reconcile with the Lord) not like Jesus warm and inviting.

The binding tie is the truth. Jesus’ credibility came from his 1) Life Lived, 2) miracles performed, 3) teaching he gave; and 4) the quality of his personhood including his Public Ethics – he was fully self-possessed.

Your measuring stick must always be truth.
