Cold as ICE – Who among you?

View looking down a deep, dark well with a rope extending into the depths.
Well, well, well. Who is worthy to be rescued?

Greetings on this the Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: Romans 9:1-5; Psalm 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20; Luke 14:1-6

Summary

He said to them, “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?” But they were unable to answer his question (Lk 14:5-6).

I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and separated from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kin according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah. God who is over all be blessed forever. Amen (Rom 9:1-5).

Reflection

Here is how I understand the gospel portion today and in relation to the lament of Saint Paul. We are all deficient in our own way and need renewal!

To be blunt, it amazes me that the words of Jesus today, Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?, falls upon deaf ears. Not just deaf ears but the audacity to reply! How many US citizens and public officials justify the brutish I.C.E. (ICE) tactics and the military occupation of USA Cities with such a reckless regard for the divine imperative. Not just reckless, but vocal self-justification loudly, dishonestly, and forcefully.

That is a severe error to be sure.

For my severe error?

Not having the heart of Saint Paul for these who have lost their humanity! Should not my heart ache as Paul’s heart ached? My conscience joins with the holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart.

Personal Reflection

We need renewal so badly!

For some, stop self-justification of treating humans as beneath and unworthy of the Sabbath. For others, bend the knee in heartfelt supplication (with confession) that we have all gone astray, each our own way, and need to return to the family of God.

Let us hear and follow. My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me (Jn 10:27).

Deje el impío su camino, y el hombre inicuo sus pensamientos, y vuélvase a Jehová, el cual tendrá de él misericordia, y al Dios nuestro, el cual será amplio en perdonar.
