Greetings on this the Saturday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: Genesis 27:1-5, 15-29; Psalm 135:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6; Matthew 9:14-17
Summary
A slightly different reflection today. This July, every Saturday, I will serve the Chapel of Holy Innocents at Mass. Father John Perez and I work together in this devotion. The primary Mass intention is the life of the expectant mothers and their unborn babies. How is it possible to separate these lives from one another in radical contradiction to the ordinary order of life?
Yet the story of Jacob’s Deception, between Isaac and the brothers Esau and Jacob. Isaac gives us clues.
…replied Isaac. “Which of my sons are you?” Again Isaac said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And Jacob said, “I am.” (Gen 27:18b, 24).
Reflection
The inflection point is to decide the answer to these questions.
- Which of my sons are you?
- Are you really my son?
When we pray for women in crisis there are multiple things to bring into intercession. Among them the men who would deceive and steal from one another, our first reading.
For our purposes, we ask a new perspective, as Jesus said in our gospel portion regarding the old and the new.
Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast (MT 9:15).
How has it come that the woman is in mourning? How can it be that she can see no wedding guests? How is it that we have taken away the bridegroom?
Personal Reflection
We pray for a good outcome. We pray for a new horizon filled with truth and love. Then the mourning will be replaced with Joy.
