Step by step

Burning Bush

Greetings on this the Wednesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: Exodus 3:1-6, 9-12; Psalm 103:1b-2, 3-4, 6-7; Matthew 11:25-27

Summary

At that time Jesus said in reply, “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. (MT 11:25-26).

Reflection

In our Old Testament reading, Moses encounters the Lord. First, by the sight of a burning bush. Second by a voice making a personal calling from the bush, Moses, Moses. Thirdly, by dialog with the divine on Identity, Relation, Qualification, Mission, and prophecy of the future.

Step by step the Lord reveals the marvelous plans he has for the people and for Moses.

  • Sight
  • Sound
  • Relation
  • Qualification (The Lord calls the unqualified and qualifies them)
  • Mission
  • Future hopes

All of this is received because, having gone through the desert into Midian (not necessarily allies to the people), Moses had become childlike.

Childlike, not childish. Childlike is possessing the good qualities of a child – innocence, openness, free from worldly bribery and ready to be the clay in the hands of the potter.

Personal Reflection

Remembering the words of Jesus in our gospel portion today, I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.

May we come to know you more closely every day. Restore us to our childlike nature!! That we may receive the blessings of intimacy as Moses found in the desert lands.
